Great books for 7 – 9 year olds

Final Cover Collage

My gorgeous niece Miss H turned 7 this week. Miss TT adores her and was very excited to be going along to an afternoon tea at her house to celebrate with the family. Despite it being a very small and casual affair, Miss TT insisted on wearing a party dress and party shoes.

Mr TT on the other hand was just in it for the cake. Needless to say, after an afternoon of cake, strawberries, pikelets and popcorn, they didn’t touch much of their dinner.

Miss H loves reading and is really into chapter books now that she can read by herself. Of course a number of books were on her wish list along with some LEGO Friends sets. We got her two books – “Nancy Clancy: The Secret of the Silver Key” and “EJ Spy School: Deep Water” plus a couple of Smiggle items which are always a hit (a sketch notebook and the macarons eraser set).

Books make wonderful gifts. I will always stick with my gift giving rule of “if in doubt, give a book”. Here are 10 great books for 7 to 9 year olds that my nieces love, our friends kids have loved and ones that I can’t wait to introduce my kids to in years to come.

Nancy Clancy             Nancy Clancy boxset

For kids who liked Fancy Nancy picture books, Nancy Clancy has grown up and features in her own chapter books. Nancy is now a detective in a series of mysteries young girls will love.

Sir Roderick        13 Storey Treehouse        Lulu Bell

Knights, royalty, wizards, an invisible girl, a talking bear, giant cockroaches and more. ‘The Adventures of Sir Roderick, the Not-Very Brave’ is a great adventure story with a mix of medieval, light fantasy, comedy and who-dunnit.

The hugely popular Treehouse series of books are silly and lots of fun – great for reluctant readers aged 7 and up.

Lulu Bell is a fun-loving, sometimes bossy 8 year old girl. She is the practical one in the family – which is fortunate because the rest of the family is slightly zany. Lulu’s dad, Dr Bell, is a busy vet, while her mum is an artist. The Bell family have lots of pets and their home is right behind the vet hospital, so Lulu helps her dad care for injured and orphaned animals including a baby possum and, in this first book, a naughty runaway pony.

Zac Power        EJ12

Zac Power’s world of adventure and espionage has been immensely successful, with around fifty exciting stories in this super boy spy series.

EJ12 Girl Hero is Australia’s bestselling adventure series for young girls.

Geronimo        Thea

The Geronimo Stilton series of books are full of fun, adventure, mystery and excitement – perfect for boys and girls aged 7-10. My nieces love Geronimo Stilton books but are even crazier about Thea Stilton. Geronimo’s adventurous sister Thea narrates this series of adventures, each packed with mystery and friendship.

Charlie and the Choc        Fantastic Mr Fox

How could I not include this book?! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was one of my very favourite books as a child (my paperback copy was well worn!). You can’t really go wrong with stories like this from a brilliant storyteller. Fantastic Mr Fox is another classic that is great for this age group.

Find these books online at Gift Grapevine’s Bookworld affiliate or your local independent bookseller.
