Miss T’s costume for her Book Week parade this week ticks all of the boxes: it’s an easy and affordable dress-up, comfortable, is a character she loves, fits this year’s theme (Escape to Everywhere), plus the character is from an Aussie author (yay for supporting local!).
Ruby Red Shoes also happens to be the character from a series of beautiful books which are my favourites to give as gifts to girls aged 4 to 6 – Ruby Red Shoes, Ruby Red Shoes Goes to Paris, and Ruby Red Shoes Goes to London.
Ruby is the creation of talented Australian illustrator and artist Kate Knapp. In addition to writing and illustrating Ruby books, her design studio, Twigseeds, produces beautiful cards, prints, and stationery. Kate creates all of her artwork by hand using pencil, ink, watercolour and “a little magic”.
Miss T loves the books. After dressing-up as another favourite character, Billie B Brown, for the last two Book Weeks, she decided she wanted to dress just like Ruby this year.
Who is Ruby Red Shoes?
Ruby Red Shoes is “a very aware hare” who loves to wear red shoes and lives in a prettily painted caravan with her grandmother. Ruby is gentle and kind and cares for all living things, including plants and trees, animals and people. She is also particular fond of strawberry jam and peppermint tea.
Ruby has a number of outfits however there’s always one constant – red shoes!
Here’s what Miss T will be wearing to dress-up as Ruby Red Shoes:
1. Red shoes – we considered buying some white canvas slip-ons from Big W for $3.50 and painting them red. That was before we spied this perfect red pair of mary-jane-croc-style red shoes for $5.
2. Bunny ears – an Easter dress up leftover (making a cardboard crown with bunny ears would work just as well).
3. Blue ribbon around her neck (a red scarf would work too).
4. Pink spotty tights.
5. A pretty skirt and long sleeve t-shirt.
I love that Miss T adores this character as much as I do. Any book that promotes kindness is a winner with me.
Bravo to Kate Knapp for creating such beautiful books (and an easy Book Week costume!). You can find out more about Kate and Ruby at the Ruby Red Shoes website. And some good news: a three-book slipcase Story Treasury featuring all three titles is being released on September 18. Add it to your gift ideas list for 4 to 6 year olds!
HAPPY BOOK WEEK EVERYONE xx
You can find these books online at Gift Grapevine’s Booktopia affiliate. You won’t pay any more however I will receive a small commission which goes towards the running of this blog. As with every item I feature on Gift Grapevine, this book is something I love and would love to give!
