My tornadoes loved playing tea parties when they were toddlers. Even now, each night they make pretend cappuccinos with bubbles in the bath, filling plastic teacups and convincing me to drink them. I still pretend to enjoy them!
Tea parties encourage gathering with friends (real, stuffed or pretend) and lots of imaginative play. Playgroup WA explains in this post that pretend play helps toddlers to use things to represent ideas and make believe. Pretending to share food and drink gives opportunities to use simple phrases and to keep a conversation going – “teddy’s thirsty”, “have some tea”, “too hot”, “milk please”, “blow on it”, and “more tea” are just some examples. Tea parties are great for development too – using cups and spoons gives opportunities to practice developing coordination skills. Even the simple act of having a teapot and cup and pouring water into different size containers builds science and math concepts.
